just me, rising

out of the ashes...

The Thorn Bird
There's a story, a legend, about a bird that sings just once in its life. From the moment it leaves its nest, it searches for a thorn tree and never rests until it's found one. And then it sings more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. And singing, it impales itself on the longest, sharpest thorn. But, as it dies, it rises above its own agony, to outsing the lark and the nightingale. The thorn bird pays its life for just one song, but the whole world stills to listen.

This weekend I opened up my kitchen for a Food Blogger Bake Sale for Share Our Strength's No Child Hungry Campaign. I've been staying out of it as we're selling our house, but I couldn't say no to a good cause - and a good treat! I had no clue what to bake - but thankfully landed on Cake Pops! and couldn't have been happier about them. I had never made them before and was very nervous, but these are a great way to easily impress.

You can easily customize these sweet treats - between different flavors of cake and frosting, and even the endless topping combinations, these will definitely be my go-to for parties from now on. What kind would you make? What are your favorite toppings?

Next time I'm doing a simple Birthday Cake one with colored sprinkles in the cake batter. And, I can't wait to try these with peanut butter and caramelized bacon on top!

For more on the bake sale, other goodies from it, more pictures, recipes and tips - please check out my blog:

Deep breath. I forgot about the whole, other people caring thing. And I do take it as caring. I know people are coming from a good place when they tell me I'm crazy for getting a "pit bull". One thing I hate right now is even saying pit bull. There is no pit bull breed. It's an American Staffordshire Terrier or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier from what I can tell. Not once, when looking up breed information, did I see pit bull. The only time I did was in the classifieds. I don't think it helps them any.

Anyway, I also realize that usually, there is nothing you can do about other people's opinions. You can show them facts. You can have them google. You can tell them whatever you want 'til you're blue in the face, and it's not likely to do anything. Most of the time, the picture they have in their head is it. It's the end all. And I don't understand that way of thinking, but I know that it's out there. I know it happens. I just wish they wouldn't judge until I actually had the dog and they could see it and see how we're training it and such.

Ugh. I just feel bad for all those dogs...

I started teaching Cressa how to play Mary had a Little Lamb yesterday. This was after her first lesson, once daddy came home. I'm really surprised she caught on so quickly. After we her lesson she was playing around with the keyboard and ended up practicing. She even got that you could play it in a different octave, although she doesn't know about octaves yet. She just knows the notes since I wrote them out on the keys. But still, I didn't show her that. Hopefully she'll pick up the rest of the song, too, it is a lot to remember.

CRESSA!!!

Ugh. haha. I am missing a knitting needle... grr.

Oh! I forgot to say, on my birthday Cressa was messing around with my parents' dog, Gracie and then this stuffed animal dog. Usually she screams leash leash leash and eventually gets one and drags poor Gracie around. Well, there had been no mention of leash so my mom was saying how happy she was about that and spelled out "leash" instead of saying it so she wouldn't go nuts. Well, she can spell. The second she spelled it out Cressa yelled LEASH! and wouldn't get over it. Weird.

Are you looking for more LJ friends? I think I have some pretty great friends here, and I think it would be great if you all got to know each other!! So, if you are looking for more friends, post a little something about yourself and what you like, dislike, what you are into, what you are looking for in a friend, post anything you'd like!!! And take a moment to read about each other, check out profiles, etc.. and add each other if you wish!

Then post this in your journal if you have some great friends you'd like to share!
